Film: Footnote

Eliezer Shkolnik is cranky, crotchety, and exceptionally old-fashioned professor of Talmudic studies at Jerusalem’s Hebrew University. Despite his relentless examination of obscure texts as a fanatical philologist, he has published almost nothing. If he’s known at all, it’s from a single footnote in the work of one  long-dead academic.

This may not sound like a premise for a film, but when his son is a (much more successful) professor in the same field and there’s a mix-up over which one is to receive a prestigious award, the story is off and going.

Our February film is a 2012 release by the famed director Joseph Cedar. It stars  Shlomo Bar-Aba as Eliezer and Lior Ashkenazi as his son Uriel.

We’ll see it on Sunday, February 17, at 2:00 p.m. in the Braunstein Community Room. It’s in Hebrew with English subtitles and is rated PG.
